Even a tip-off from Cynthia herself about her son’s supposed girlfriend shooting a man wasn’t enough to initiate a thorough investigation. They began to go through the backyard, which was absolutely filthy, which could have made the search difficult, but it was actually relatively easy to see where the ground had been disturbed. They found "mold, garbage, debris and animal feces" inside and called it "toxic" and "unsafe". The Forsyth County housing department said the owner of the home at 2749 Knob Hill Drive in Clemmons had until mid-February to submit proof she would make it habitable. Psychiatrists who interviewed Algarad said had had schizophrenia, agoraphobia and alcoholism, but found him mentally competent to stand trial. They also reported had intentionally filed down his teeth and had poor hygiene and body odor, the report said.
After his name change, Algarad aimed to ostracize himself from society, covering his face in tattoos and filing his teeth into points. He would tell people that he regularly made animal sacrifices and even claimed to be able to control the weather. Charged in their deaths are 35-year-old Pazuzu Algarad and 24-year-old Amber Nicole Burch, who lived at the house. Pazuzu Illah Algarad, then 35, and his self-proclaimed wife, Amber Nicole Burch, 24, were arrested and charged with murder. They weren’t legally married, though each had written on their Facebook that they’d been married since November 1, 2009. In 2011, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault for putting his mother in a chokehold.

On March 9, 2017, Amber Burch pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, armed robbery, and accessory after the fact to murder.
